Nerezine
Region: The island of Losinj
Nerezine is a community on the east side of the island of Losinj, at the foot of the mountain Osoršæica. It developed out of many isolated houses that people built on their land for cultivation. Only recently, due to development of navigation and shipping, it grew into a coastal settlement.
In the past, Nerezine were very dependent on Osor, mostly because of its cultivable plots of land that supplied the population. The tower, the St. Francis' Monastery and the church built by the Osor patrician Kolan Draza, give Nerezine their characteristic identity. As a result of development of navigation and shipping trade, a town harbour and shipping yard have been built in Nerezine.
As a tourist destination, Nerezine was discovered in the last century, notably because of Osorscica, which fascinates the visitors. At one time in the past, Nerezine had a population of 2,000, but now it has only 400 inhabitants.
